COVID-19: a message of personal responsibility

Assalamu alaikum Brothers and Sisters:

We would like you as a member of MANAL to review the following information carefully and to take the requested measures. It provides you with an update from MANAL on the current situation and a path forward.

First of all, we remind everyone to follow the advice of Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, NL Chief Medical Officer of Health, regarding frequent handwashing with soap and warm water, social (physical) distancing, staying home to keep yourself and others safe, and self-isolation if needed. While we are observing social distancing, it is strongly recommended to increase our self-reflection, Taqwa and Islamic responsibility to care/help for the vulnerable members of the community, and to keep connected with our family, friends, and community members through telephone and other remote modes of communication.

As you know, the Masjid Al Noor (MANAL Mosque)  has been closed for worship. However, our role in the larger community continues, and we are striving to provide assistance wherever possible. We are requesting that you send in your ZAKAT and DONATIONS to the Mosque online (please visit http://www.manal.ca/donate to donate online and for info on direct transfer to MANAL's account).  Cheques may also be written payable to MANAL and mailed to MANAL, 430 Logy Bay Road, St. John's, NL, A1A 5C6.

In our efforts to help the members of the community impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, MANAL is establishing a special fund know as the “COVID-19 Emergency Fund” . We request you to donate generously towards this fund, which can also be done through www.manal.ca/donate. Your generous donations will help maintain our capacity to help the most vulnerable during these difficult and challenging times.

We request each of you to support the MANAL (Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador) in its services, and to continue to be part of the solution.

As we are seeking Allah’s mercy, we must place our hearts in submission by giving what we have in efforts of prayer, supplication, service and Sadaqa. We ask Allah (SWT) to keep you and your families safe and healthy.

We ask Allah (SWT) to benefit you thereby and decree reward for you.

In this time of uncertainty, we seek Allah’s protection and ask that He relieves us from the pandemic that is affecting each of us locally and us globally.

Oh Allah, your power and mercy exceeds all. We place all our belief and reliance on You, Oh Allah, we ask that You protect us and rid this pandemic from the world. Praise be to Allah Almighty as it is He who gives us success, it is He who protects us, and to Him we shall return.

﴾O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Thaalimoon (wrongdoers)﴿

[Al-Baqarah 2:254]

Oh God, remove this burden from us.

Oh God, all affairs are in your control, the creation is Yours, and there is no power except Yours.

We believe in You and put our trust in You.

Oh God, remove this epidemic from us.

Oh God, do not prolong the closure of our Mosques.

Oh God, accept our prayer to lift this scourge, Oh Lord of the worlds.

Finally, We encourage each of you to have faith and hope in the mercy of Allah (SWT). Insha’Allah, the current trial shall pass similar to other trials of life.  Please be assured that MANAL will keep you posted about our current and future plans of action regarding this crisis.

IMPORTANT - MOSQUE CLOSURE DUE TO COVID-19

Assalamu alaikum,

As you are aware, all levels of government have placed measures across our province to try and contain the spread of COVID-19.  MANAL has been regularly monitoring the situation in our province as well as in other jurisdictions in Canada.

In an effort to minimize the spread of the disease, the MANAL Executive Committee has decided to suspend all daily prayers as well as Jum'aa prayers in the mosque premises until further notice.

The mosque will remain closed until MANAL deems it safe for our members to pray in congregations.  Members will be notified when the mosque will reopen.

We appreciate your cooperation in this regard.  Please note that any unauthorized access to the mosque will be reported to the law enforcement authorities without exception.

Jazak Allahu Khairan

Remembering January 29 and Green Square Campaign

Green Square

On the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of the tragic Quebec City mosque shooting, the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANAL) is joining the Green Square Campaign - a nationwide initiative powered by the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec (CCIQ), National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and Islamic Relief Canada.

The campaign involves publicly wearing green squares from 27th to the 29th of January, 2020 to express solidarity with the families of the victims and the survivors of this terrible act of Islamophobic violence.

The green square symbolizes the green carpet of the Quebec City mosque, that was soaked in the blood of innocent victims. Among other things, green is also perceived as the color of life, harmony, safety and hope.

Members of our Muslim community and all fellow Canadians are kindly invited to join the campaign and to widely share it through social media accounts over the next few days. You can easily home make your own 2" x 2" square using solid green felt (or any other solid green material) and then attach it to your cloth with a safety pin.

In addition to this simple but meaningful act, you may also donate to Islamic Relief Canada who is raising funds to assist the families of the victims.

Thank you,
MANAL Executive Committee

State of Emergency and Mosque Access

Dear Brothers and Sisters
Assalamo Alaikum

As of 4:30pm today (January 23, 2020), the State of Emergency (SOE) for the City of St. John's remains in effect. As a result, MANAL Executives have decided to comply with the SOE and keep the Mosque premises closed for regular prayers including Friday (Jum'aa) prayer until the SOE is lifted by the City of St. John's.

We need to comply with such restrictions to ensure the safety of our community members as well as to enable first responders to address the ongoing snow clearing efforts.

If anyone comes to the Mosque during the State of Emergency, they  may be subject to penalties as determined by the various levels of government.

Your cooperation during this time of emergency is highly appreciated.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan,

MANAL Executives
