State of Emergency and Mosque Access

Dear Brothers and Sisters
Assalamo Alaikum

As of 4:30pm today (January 23, 2020), the State of Emergency (SOE) for the City of St. John's remains in effect. As a result, MANAL Executives have decided to comply with the SOE and keep the Mosque premises closed for regular prayers including Friday (Jum'aa) prayer until the SOE is lifted by the City of St. John's.

We need to comply with such restrictions to ensure the safety of our community members as well as to enable first responders to address the ongoing snow clearing efforts.

If anyone comes to the Mosque during the State of Emergency, they  may be subject to penalties as determined by the various levels of government.

Your cooperation during this time of emergency is highly appreciated.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan,

Friday Prayer Cancelled

Dear Brothers and Sisters
Assalamo Alaikum

Please note that today’s Friday prayer is cancelled as the City of
St. John’s has declared a state of emergency due to the
ongoing storm. City roads and the Mosque parking area have not
been cleaned.  Insha’Allah the Mosque will open tomorrow once
the state of emergency has been lifted and it is safe to drive.

Weekend Islamic School - Update

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahu Wa Barakatuhu.

The weekend Islamic School for our children has been a consistent service of MANAL ever since our mosque became available for regular use in late 1989.  Alhamdulillah, during the past 30 years, hundreds of children from numerous ethnic and linguistic backgrounds have benefited from this service by gaining essential Islamic knowledge and guidance thanks to the selfless dedication of the volunteer teachers.

Over the past few years, it became evident that the Muslim population in our city has grown exponentially.  This is especially true for families with young children. Consequently, there has been a rise in the number of children enrolled in the weekend Islamic School.

Unfortunately, our mosque is no longer able to accommodate the increase in the number and size of the classes. It is necessary that we continue this essential service without potentially violating provincial workplace health and safety rules which have strict stipulations on room capacity. Accordingly, it has been decided that the mosque will not be used to conduct weekend Islamic School from December 31, 2019 onward.

However, starting from Saturday, January 4, 2020, MANAL weekend Islamic School will resume its services at the Association for New Canadians' (ANC) Training Center located at 148 Elizabeth Avenue. In September, Br. Abdel Zaher and Sr. Eman visited the new location and explored its educational facilities. As the volunteer Principal and Vice-Principal of MANAL weekend Islamic School, they will continue to be in charge and responsible for the recruitment and supervision of volunteer teachers.

We are truly grateful to both Br. Abdel Zaher and Sister Eman for their tireless and selfless efforts in educating our young children for over 25 years. We pray that they both continue serving our community and educating our children for many years to come Insha'Allah.

In the coming days, Br. Abdel Zaher will inform the parents about the schedules and other details related to Saturday classes that will be held at the ANC Training Center. In the meantime, you are welcome to e-mail MANAL at manal@manal.ca if you have any questions.
