Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahu Wa Barakatuhu.

We would like to invite you to our Mosque on Saturday, October 12, from 3 pm to 4.30 pm for an Open House about the upcoming federal elections and the concerns / expectations of various local faith communities.

The event is hosted by the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANAL) and co-organized together with the Anglican East NL and the Religious Social Action Coalition.

At the beginning of the program, the co-organizers will each make a brief introduction on one of the following three topics:

-Poverty reduction

-Challenges of seniors and refugee newcomers

-Systemic racial and religious discrimination, including Islamophobia

Then, electoral candidates from St. John's East and St. John's South - Mount Pearl will respond to these introductions by outlining how they perceive these topics and how they plan to address them if and when elected. The program will continue with a Q&A session during which the electoral candidates will answer questions from the wider audience.

At the end, there will be a reception which will provide all participants an extended forum for informal exchanges.

So, increase in them your declaration of the oneness of Allah (tahlil), your exaltation of Him (takbir) and your praise of Him (tahmid)". It is also reported that fasting on the day of Arafah will expiate the sins of the previous and upcoming years.

Workshop Information:

Understanding our rights and responsibilities as Muslims in Canada is essential to being able to effectively advocate for ourselves and others in our community. That’s why the NCCM is traveling across Canada to bring their ‘Know Your Rights’ workshop directly to us.

In these workshops, we will learn about our rights in the workplace (such as the right to religious accommodation including prayer time or dress requirements), healthcare system (e.g. as our right to be treated without discrimination by our medical practitioner), when traveling and dealing with the police (for instance, our rights in relation to border officials, CSIS/RCMP members or other law enforcement officers), on a school campus (such as when interacting with campus police or our local Muslim Student Association) and in other important life situations.

Whether you think you know all of your rights and responsibilities, or feel you know very little about them – this workshop will equip you with essential tools and knowledge to secure your rights in diverse situations.

Please kindly note that the program will begin at 6 pm sharp on Wednesday, July 24 and it would be appreciated if you arrive 10 minutes earlier at the workshop location (Masjid Al Noor Social Hall, 430 Logy Bay Road, St. John's, NL).

There will be some refreshments after the workshop is over at 7.30 pm.
