The Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANAL) was formed in 1982. The association successfully opened Newfoundland’s first and only mosque, Masjid an-Noor in 1990 at St. John's, Newfoundland.

The first documented presence of Muslims in Newfoundland and Labrador goes back to 1964, when Dr. Muhammad Irfan joined Memorial University of Newfoundland as a faculty member in the Department of Physics. Today the Muslim community in Newfoundland is comprised of over 200 families, in addition to many undergraduate and graduate students studying at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
